Major Folk Drama and Theatre of Madhya Pradesh

Bundeli Swang

  • Swang is the most popular folk dance among the all folk dance practiced in Bundelkhand. 
  • It is known by different names in different areas, such as Rammat, Gammat, Khayal, etc  

Khamba Swang

  • In this, dance is performed around a pole buried in ground and hence its name Khamba Swang. 
  • In this, they worship Ravan's son Meghnath. 
  • This folk dance is prevalent among the Keraku tribe.
 Gammat

  • Gammat is the most prominent folk dance of the Nimadari zone, in which the Mridang and cymbals are the main Instruments
  • Gammat is a living form of humor. It is organized on Navratri

Rasleela

  • Basically, it is folk drama of Uttar Pradesh that is performed in the month of Bhado around Krishna Janmashtami in Bhind, Morena, and Gwalior districts of M.P.

Ramleela 

  • Ramleela is performed in M.P. rural areas on the occasion of Dussehra.

Chahur

  • It is Baghelkhand's folk drama which is basically performed by Agriculturist castes viz. Aheer, Teli, and Kumhar caste's people.

Macha

  • This is an important folk drama of the Malwa region. It originated from Ujjain City.
  • This play is usually organized in the open space.

Kathi

  • Kathi is a popular folk drama of the Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh.

Nautanki

  • This is a folk drama of the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. Issues related to society are staged in this. Its main themes are Bairang Raja and Maniharin

Karmas

  • This is a folk drama of the Baiga tribe. This folk drama begins in Dussehra and ends during the Rainy season. Mainly dance and songs are part of it.

Rai Swang

  • This is an important folk drama of Bundelkhand. Acting and dancing both are performed in this drama.

Pandwani

  • The meaning of Pandwani is supposed to be the story of Pandavas. Story, music, acting everything is performed in this.

Gajanan Madhav

  • Born on 13th November 1917 in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • He was one of the most prominent Hindi poets, essayest, and theatre artist.
  • He directed more than 50 dramas and also served as Assistant Director of Theatre of Art at the Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal.

Baba Dike

  • Born in Neemuch district of MP.
  • Founded Natya Bhartiya Sansthan in 1944 with Vishnu Chichalkar and Rahul Barpute.
  • His first drama was Akhand Tandav.
Habib Tanvir
  • Born on 1st September 1923 in Raipur ( Now Chattisgarh).
  • He was the writer of the plays such as Agra Bazar, Charandas Chor.
  • He won several awards including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1969, Padma Shree in 1983, Kalidas Samman in 1990, and Padma Bhushan in 2002.

Jaya Bhaduri Bacchan

  • Born in Jabalpur.
  • Honored with Padma Shri in 1992.

Annu Kapoor

  • Born in the Bhopal district.
  • He received Nationa Film award 2012 for the best supporting actor for Viky Doner.

Rangmandal

  • It organizes plays and has an outdoor theatre called Bahirang and an indoor theatre called Antarang.
  • Situated at Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal.

Ustad Allaudin Khan Sangeet Academy

  • Established in 1979 by MP Government in Satna district.
Madhya Pradesh Cultural Council
  • It was set up in 2003 in Bhopal.
  • Ustad Allauddin Khan Academy ( Maihar), Kalidas Academy, Sahitya Academy, MP Kala Parishad, and MP Adivasi Lok Kala Parishad forms part of  Madhya Pradesh Cultural Council.
