Major Folk Music/Song of Madhya Pradesh

Music from Madhya Pradesh includes rural folk and tribal music, ceremonial and ritual music, and Indian classical music. Unlike in many parts of India, the people of Madhya Pradesh place few restrictions on who can sing which songs. With the exception of some ritualistic works, people sing songs from across ethnic and racial boundaries. The various traditional folk singing styles are prevalent in the four regions of Madhya Pradesh - Nimad, Malwa, Baghelkhand, and Bundelkhand.

Folk Song Of Nimar

Kalgi- Turra Songs

  • The cultural color of Nimad, the traditional art form of Kalgi-Turra is still intact.
  • There are two choirs in this art – one is called Kalgi and the other is called Turra Dal. Both parties consist of singers, songwriters, and fellow performers along with musical instruments. There is a competition between the two parties whereby they continuously present their best song to outdo the other. 
  • The tradition started in the pride of the royal families, has a history that the heads of both the parties are given a new identity as Kalgi and Turra respectively. 
  • Apart from rural areas, Kalgi Turra is organized in special events in Nimar. 
  • Turra singer Shivram Kushwaha Magariya, Kalgi singer Yashwant Yadav Rampura are the main folk songwriter/singer.

Sant Singaji Songs

  • Sant Singa is the foremost among the 15th-century Nirguna saint poets.
  • It is said that Saint Singaji composed several hundred spiritual posts in Nimari.
  • Singaji himself developed the style of singing bhajans in high tone with mridang and cymbals.
  • Dagdu Gappal of Nagjhiri and Susri Jeevanta Kheda mandals of Harsud can be called the best mandali of today's Sant Singaji Bhajan singing style.

Nirguniya Songs

  • There is a good and rich tradition of composing and singing posts by imprinting Nirguni and Saguna saint poets in Nimari folk.
  • Bhajans Kabir, Meera, Raidas, Brahms, Dadu Sur, etc. are most prevalent in folk.

Songs of Masanya or Kayakho

  • The songs of Masanya or Kayakho is known as the death songs of Nimad. 
  • The style of singing is slightly different from the saint Singaji Bhajan.
  • Masanya or Kayakho songs are also sung in groups with cymbal mridang and ikatare.
  • In Masanya or Kayakho Geeta, the soul is worshiped as a bride and the body goes to the bridegroom. 

Phag Singing (song)

  • Phag songs are sung on the occasion of Holi, which are often focused on Krishna and Radha, playing two or three dhafs and singing loudly in a loud male voice, which includes laughter, jokes, humor.

Garba song

  • Mainly sung by women of Nimar in the Navratri.
  • Women sing Garba song with the clap.

Garbi song

  • Mainly male  folk singing of Nimar 
  • It is sung with Jhanj Mridang. 
  • Nimari Garbi song is a major part of folk theater singing. 
  • Garbi is basically a Goddess in the song.

Gavalan Songs

  • Gavalagit is Krishna Leela song. 
  • Its singing method is different from Garabi. 
  • Gavalan songs are mainly used in Raslila. 
  • Gavalan songs are male class which are sung on Jhanj Mridang and Dholak!

Folk Song Of Malwa

Malvi Folk Songs

  • In Malwa, there is a tradition of singing traditional folk songs on the occasion of Punsvan, birth, Mundan, Janeu, engagement, marriage. 
  • The tradition of singing festival songs related to the festival is also found in the entire Malwa region.

Bharthari Singing

  • The people of the Nath sect in Malwa sing Bhartari on Chinkara. 
  • Chinkara is an ancient and traditional instrument made from coconut nutty bamboo and horse hair.
  • Bharthari Gopichand Katha Gorakh Vani Kabir singing hymns of Meera ji, Nathpanthi people can still meet in the village of Malwa.

Nirguni Bhajan Singing

  •  The Nirguni folk verse singing tradition of Malwa is very old. 
  • Nirguni or hymns have the impression of Kabir's spirituality.
  • Many groups of singing Nirguni bhajans are present in Malwa, among them, the group of Shri Pahlada Tipapana is very famous.

Sanja song

  • Sanjagit is basically the traditional singing method of adolescent girls.

Heed singing

  • In the month of Shravan, there is a practice of singing in Malwa.

Barsati song

Folk songs of Bundelkhand

Bundeli Folklore

  • In the Land of Shaurya and Shringar, the art and culture of Bundelkhand are the most different. 
  • The folk songs here confuse the tone and the tone of the flourishing and adornment. 
  • There are two main vocals of folk singing here. One is a conspiracy and the other is medium. Male vocals and Bal Sulabh folk singing vocals are similar to Praya Sadj. 

Alha Singing

  • Bhola song is related to Shiva and Shakti. Bhola comes out singing the song.

Fag song

  •  Fag singing takes place on the occasion of Holi, as soon as the month of Fagun. 
  • Thakur Fag, Isuri Fag, Rai Fag start in the whole of Bundelkhand which goes on to Rang Panchami after burning Holi, men and women on each other.

Bairaita Song

  • Bairaita is the original singing style in which mainly the Mahabharata stories are sung along with the stories of many historical character folk heroes. 
  • The person singing the barita centrally sings a person, he accompanies the associate vocalist.

Dewari Singing

  •  Dewari Singing focuses on couplets. 
  • Ahir Gawli is a tradition of singing and dancing Dewari among Bareldi dhoshi etc. 
  • On the occasion of Diwali, Gwal Baal, wearing peacock feathers on the head, asks for house-to-door devari.

Puvara song of Jagdev

  •  Puvara is basically in Bhajan style a long narrative related to the praise of Goddess which devotees sing in Kshetra and Quar Mass.

Bagheli folk songs

  • Basdeva sings many kinds of legends and songs of tradition. 
  • Basdeva singers go out from village to village for many Yajaman.

Birha Singing

  • Birha singing tradition is found mostly in Baghelkhand. 
  • Birha's singing style is completely original. 
  • Birha is sung as a question-answer form
  • Birha is sung with a high pit with a finger in the ears. 

Bideshia Singing

  • Bideshia singing is found throughout Baghelkhand.
  • People of Gadaria, Teli, Kotwar caste have special expertise in Bideshiya singing tradition.
  • Bideshia has long and serious vocals. 

Phag Singing 

  • The tradition of singing Phag is first and foremost in Baghelkhand. 
  • Here the phag singing is done on the Nagada.

Lavani Singing
