Major events in the history of Madhya Pradesh

Flag Satyagraha (Jhanda Satyagrah)

  • Flag Satyagraha is a campaign of peaceful civil disobedience during the Indian independence movement that focused on exercising the right and freedom to hoist the nationalist flag and challenge the legitimacy of the British Rule in India through the defiance of laws prohibiting the hoisting of nationalist flags and restricting civil freedoms. 
  • Flag Satyagrahas were conducted most notably in the city of Jabalpur and Nagpur in 1923 but also in many other parts of India.
  • The Satyagrah was led by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, Pandit Sundar Lal Sharma and Nathuram Modi.

Salt Satyagrah

  • Launched at Jabalpur on 6th April 1930 under the leadership of Seth Govind Das and Pt. Dwarika Prasad Mishra.
  • Durga Shankar Mehta started this satyagraha by making Salt of Gandhi Chauk, Seoni.

Jungle Satyagraha

  • In 1930 Mahatma Gandhi organized the Dandi March to start the salt satyagraha. At this time the tribals of Seoni- under the leadership of Durga Shankar Mehta, DP Mishra, Lalaram Vajpayee, and others organized a march of 9-10 Km to cut grass from the government sandalwood garden to resister their anger against the British rule. This is known as the Jungle Satyagraha.
  • During the protest tribes of the Ghora-Dogari region came out of the jungle with lathis in hand and blankets on shoulders. They were led by Gunjan Singh Korku.

Charan Paduka Massacre

  • On 14th January 1931, in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, where police opened fire on the peaceful meeting which killed 21 people and injured 26 others.
  • Known as Jalliawala Bag Massacre of Madhya Pradesh.

Sohbal Massacre

  • On 19th July 1938, in Sohaval Riyasat in Hinauta Village( district Satna) of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Leader- Lal Buddha Prtap Singh

Bhopal Praja Mandal

  • Founded by Master Lal Singh, Laxmi Narayan Singhal, and others in 1937.
  • Organized against the Bhopal state.

Tripuri Congress

  • 52nd Congress Session held on 29 January 1939 at Tripuri  (Jabalpur).
  • President- Rajendra Prasad
  • Subhas Chandra Bose was elected as president against Pattabhi Sitaramayya but had to resign and Rajendra Prasad was appointed in his place.

Individaual Satyagrah

  • Started from Jabalpur in 1941.
  • Vinova Bhave became the first Individual Satyagrahi.

Quit India Movement

  • A large number of people from Madhya Pradesh and tribal leaders of Betul participated in Quit India Movement (1942).
